Sex is the biological characteristic that defines humans as female or male. These characteristics do not change from time to time and are found in every culture.

Gender refers to socially and culturally defined roles for males and females. These roles are learned over time, can change from time to time, and vary widely within and between cultures. Gender is not only about girls/women. However, the traditionally defined gender roles disadvantage girls and women.
